Today, the European Commission launched a public consultation on an extensive 218-page list of US imports that could face EU countermeasures against US tariffs. This action would be taken if EU-US negotiations do not result in a mutually beneficial outcome and the removal of the US tariffs.
The list includes imports from the US valued at €95 billion, covering a broad range of industrial and agricultural products. The Commission is also preparing a second list proposing potential restrictions certain EU exports of steel scrap and chemical products to the US, worth €4.4 billion. This consultation aims to address both the US universal tariffs and the tariffs on cars and car parts.
In parallel, the EU will launch a dispute against the US at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regarding its universal “reciprocal” tariffs. The EU views these tariffs as a blatant violation of fundamental WTO rules. The EU’s objective is thus to reaffirm the importance of internationally agreed rules, which cannot be unilaterally disregarded by any WTO member, including the US.
In addition, the Commission will continue to pursue negotiations with other trading partners to find new export markets and diversify sources of supply, in continuation of their declarations made at the First EU-Asia Central Asia Summit. The Commission will also continue its ongoing work to reduce trade barriers and strengthen the EU’s Single Market.
