Today, European leaders gathered at the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Albania, confronting a world rapidly shifting from order to disorder, largely fuelled by Russia’s imperialist ambitions. There, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen emphasised that Europe, awakened by recent crises, must actively forge its role in this new geopolitical era.

While the Gaza crisis or the current trade troubles with the United States were mentioned or implied, the central message was the continent’s unwavering and unified support for Ukraine. This solidarity, vital for preserving peace and defending sovereignty, remains a core goal for Europe. Efforts to impose consequences on Russia and work towards a just peace settlement for Ukraine were highlighted as proof of this collective resolve.

Beyond confronting immediate threats, a key focus was building a better future for Europe. Both leaders stressed the vital link between economic strength, resilience, and lasting stability, highlighting initiatives aimed at boosting competitiveness and fostering shared prosperity. Specific plans mentioned included deepening connectivity through investments in cross-border transport, trade, and digital infrastructure, such as the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and Moldova and the new EU-Central Asia Connectivity Agenda. The importance of upholding global agreements like the Paris Agreement on climate change and strengthening multilateralism through the United Nations and its Pact for the Future was also underlined.

These diverse plans and partnerships demonstrate Europe’s determination to not only navigate current crises but also actively shape a prosperous, stable, and interconnected future for the continent in a new world.
